Boron tribromide, BBr3, is a colorless, fuming liquid compound containing boron and bromine. It is usually made by heating boron trioxide with carbon in the presence of bromine: this generates free boron which reacts vigorously with the bromine. It is very volatile and fumes in air because it reacts vigorously with water to form boric acid and hydrogen bromide.

Health hazards

It has strong stimulative effect to eyes, skin, mucous membrane and respiratory system.

If you inhale this product, you will die from the spasm, edema or inflammation of throat and bronchus, or you will get chemical pneumonia or pulmonary edema then die of it.

The more symptoms of being poisoned are coughing, wheezing, and laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. You will also have a sensation of being burned.

Uses: Boron tribromide is used as catalyst, intermediate and brominating agent in organic synthesis and is the raw material of making high-purity boron powder and other organoboron compound. It is also used as the dopant source of the semiconductor silicon and is used to make the high-purity boron and the organoboron compound
